Short answer: restart the TV properly (unplug it for a minute), check for a TV software update and an iPlayer app update, then sign out and back in to your BBC account. If iPlayer has vanished or says it is no longer available, your TV may be running an old version of the app that the BBC has stopped supporting – in that case, an update or a low-cost streaming stick is usually the answer.
First: is it iPlayer, your TV or your broadband?
Before changing settings, spend a minute working out where the problem is:
- Does iPlayer work on your phone or laptop? If not, the problem may be on the BBC’s side or with your broadband. The BBC posts known issues on its iPlayer help pages.
- Do other apps (Netflix, YouTube, ITVX) work on the TV? If they also fail, the cause is likely your TV’s connection – see our guide to fixing smart TV buffering or, for Samsung, Samsung TV not connecting to Wi-Fi.
- Is only iPlayer affected on the TV? Work through the steps below.
Fixes for iPlayer not working on a smart TV
1. Do a full restart
Pressing the power button often only puts a smart TV into standby. Switch it off at the wall or unplug it for 60 seconds, then switch it back on. This clears temporary faults in the TV’s apps.
2. Update the TV’s software
The BBC’s own advice for iPlayer failing to load on a connected TV includes making sure the TV’s firmware or system software is up to date. Our step-by-step guide shows how to update smart TV software on Samsung, LG, Sony and other brands. See our guide on smart TV operating systems for how different platforms handle updates.
3. Update or reinstall the iPlayer app
The BBC says that if iPlayer has been removed from a TV, a common reason is that the device is not using the latest version of the app. Check your TV’s app store for an update. If the app is still listed, deleting and reinstalling it (where your TV allows) gives you a clean copy.
4. Sign out and back in
iPlayer needs you to sign in with a BBC account. If the app keeps asking you to sign in, or shows an error after signing in, sign out from the app’s settings, restart the TV, then sign in again – often by entering a code at the BBC’s website on your phone.
5. Check the date, time and region settings
Incorrect date and time settings can break secure connections in streaming apps. Set them to automatic. iPlayer is designed for viewers in the UK, so VPNs or location-changing services on your router can also stop it working.
6. Check your connection
If iPlayer starts but buffers or drops quality, move the router closer, use the 5GHz band or an Ethernet cable, and test your speed on the TV. Our broadband speed guide explains what you need for HD and 4K.
7. Factory reset as a last resort
The BBC lists a factory reset among the steps for a connected TV that will not load iPlayer. Only do this after the steps above, because you will need to set up the TV, apps and logins again.
iPlayer disappeared or says “no longer available”
Streaming services periodically stop supporting older TVs and older versions of their apps, usually because the TV can no longer run the latest app or security standards. If your TV is affected:
- Check for both TV and app updates first – sometimes a newer app version is available.
- Look at the BBC’s help page for unsupported devices, which lists other ways to watch.
- Consider a streaming stick or box plugged into an HDMI port. This is often cheaper than replacing a TV that otherwise works well. Our guides to the Fire TV Stick, Roku and Google TV compare the options.
- Games consoles and some set-top boxes also carry iPlayer – see TV apps on PS5 and Xbox.
Before buying anything, check the device you are considering is listed as supported on the BBC’s website.
Do you need a TV licence for iPlayer?
Yes. TV Licensing states that you need a TV licence to watch or download any BBC programmes on iPlayer – live, catch-up or on demand – on any device. The app may ask you to confirm you have one.
FAQ
Why is BBC iPlayer not working on my Samsung TV?
Start with a full restart, a TV software update and an app update. If iPlayer has disappeared from an older Samsung model, it may no longer be supported on that model. Our Samsung smart TV apps guide explains how apps are managed on Samsung TVs.
Why does iPlayer work on my phone but not my TV?
That points to the TV – an outdated app, an old software version or the TV’s network connection – rather than the BBC service itself.
Is there a problem with iPlayer right now?
Check the “Known issues” section of the BBC iPlayer help site, and test the app on another device.
