Short answer: choose OLED for the best contrast and films in a darker room, and QLED (or Mini-LED) for a brighter picture in sunny living rooms and for daytime sport. Both make excellent 4K smart TVs — the right one depends on your room and budget.

| Burn-in risk | None | Low with normal use |
| Sizes & prices | Wide range, often cheaper | Usually 42 in+ and pricier |
| Best for | Bright rooms, sport, gaming | Films, dark rooms, contrast |
What is QLED?
QLED is an LCD TV with a quantum-dot layer that improves colour and brightness. Mini-LED QLEDs use thousands of tiny backlight zones for much better contrast. Samsung, Hisense and TCL sell many QLED models.
What is OLED?
OLED panels have no backlight: every pixel produces its own light and can switch off completely. That gives perfect blacks and wide viewing angles. LG, Sony, Panasonic and Philips sell OLED TVs; Samsung uses a version called QD-OLED.
Which is better for…
- Films and dark rooms: OLED.
- Bright living rooms: QLED or Mini-LED.
- Football and daytime sport: Mini-LED for brightness; OLED for motion clarity.
- Gaming: both are great with HDMI 2.1 and 120Hz — OLED has lower response times.
- Tight budget: QLED.
Neo QLED and QD-OLED explained
Neo QLED is Samsung’s name for Mini-LED QLED TVs. QD-OLED combines OLED with a quantum-dot layer for brighter colours. Both are premium options.
