Smart TV vs Sky and Virgin Media: Do You Still Need a TV Box?

Smart TV vs Sky and Virgin Media: Do You Still Need a TV Box?

Short answer: many UK households no longer need a Sky or Virgin Media box. A smart TV with Freeview Play plus apps like NOW, Netflix and Prime Video covers most viewing. You may still want Sky or Virgin if you watch lots of Sky Sports, want everything in one bundle, or rely on recording many channels.

What to check before you switch

  • Sky without a dish: when Sky launched Sky Stream in 2022, it said the service works without a satellite dish, streams to your TV over Wi-Fi and works with any broadband provider. Check Sky’s current packages and contract terms before you sign up.
  • Virgin Media needs its own broadband: Virgin Media’s website currently says its TV 360 service needs at least its M50 fibre broadband. The options it lists include bundled TV packages with a 24-month contract and a rolling 30-day Flex TV option, but the terms for your package may differ, so check what applies to you.
  • Sky Sports without a pay-TV box: NOW says its Sports Membership includes the Sky Sports channels. According to NOW, its monthly Sports Membership has no contract and can be cancelled at any time, while its 12-month option has a minimum term, so the cancellation terms depend on which option you choose.
  • Contract terms change: check the current terms with each provider before you sign up or cancel, including your contract end date and any early exit charges.

If your TV is not a smart TV, a streaming stick can add the apps. See Roku vs Firestick.
